George Selden was pretty close, he had a patent application out before Karl Benz.. though he didn't build anything and forced other American manufacturers to pay him royalties and otherwise hindered progress because he was a bastard.

This I did not know, but he knew the American way! Find something innovative and then make people pay to innovate it. Muhahahahahaha!! My cousin says they teach you to make patents for possible products in the future.

Yeah he went head to head against Henry Ford in the end, the Judge awarded the case towards Selden saying that his patent covered "any automobile propelled by gasoline vapour". Ford appealed saying that Seldens' engine was based on the Brayton Cycle, and that Ford designed his off Otto's so they weren't really the same (though the Brayton was based on Otto).

Ford went to the point of saying that the Selden hadn't contributed anything to the Automobile industry and it would be more advanced if Selden had never been born.

In their defense, I thought the same too until I watched a top gear segment about who had the first modern car setup. Though history books did say the first mass-produced car, after that the distinction becomes blurred.
